Charity in dire need of drivers

AN Aldershot charity which provides a vital service to elderly and disabled people is in dire need of more volunteer drivers.
Kath Beauchamp, co-ordinator at Aldershot Neighbourcare, has had to turn away needy people who call the service to help them get to hospital or dental appointments.
The charity serves the elderly and those with mobility difficulties. Volunteer drivers transport them to hospital, or to appointments with doctors or dentists at minimal cost.  Most cannot get to or step up into a bus.
Currently Aldershot Neighbourcare has a pool of only seven car drivers.
Jack Eyers, the charity’s secretary, said they do not like having to turn people away, which is why they are looking for more volunteers.
He said: “No one is asked to do something they can’t comfortably do, which is why we have to turn people away.
“Clients are extremely grateful, they are the hidden people of Aldershot and they’ve had strokes or are too frail to go far. They can’t even step up to a bus, if they’re even near one.”
By sparing a few daytime hours each month, a driver can give something back to the community and help someone in need.
A mileage allowance is offered, but the charity said the main reward is the gratitude and appreciation of those helped.
This work is particularly suitable for those who are retired or work part-time, but anyone who can occasionally spare an hour or two would be very welcome.
