Wood demo turns heads

SHOPPERS stopped and stared in fascination as craftsmen turned lumps of wood into beautiful objects in Princes Mead on Saturday.
Members of the Surrey Association of Woodturners worked on various specialist pieces of equipment including lathes and saws, transforming pieces of wood into bowls, ornaments and toys.
Organiser Roy Edwards did a roaring trade on giving away free teddies, chickens and rabbits to the dozens of youngsters who stopped to watch.
“I brought 60 with me that I’d made before the demonstration – but ran out and had to nip over to B&Q for more wood to make more!” he said.
The association’s membership drive has been paying off, he said, with one new member joining on the spot and another four promising to go along to the next meeting.
The group meets at Mytchett Community centre every second Friday at 7.30pm.
They have been in Mytchett for 18 years and always welcome visitors and new members.
