Town's future is open to debate

SURREY Heath residents and stakeholders will have their say on a new area action plan for Camberley town centre.
Pedestrianisation of the High Street is just one of the proposals contained in the Area Action Plan for Camberley Town Centre – a draft of which has been agreed by Surrey Heath Borough Council executive members.
The action plan sets out the council’s strategy and policies for new development, transportation, design and the environment up to 2026.
As well as addressing the town centre’s retail development, particularly in relation to the new Atrium shopping centre, the plan looks at housing, leisure, community and employment issues.
Key proposals include increasing retail floorspace with a focus on the London Road Block, new housing, a transport interchange incorporating a redeveloped station, a new multi-storey car park on London Road, pedestrianisation of the High Street, and the provision of more open spaces in the town centre.
Portfolio holder for corporate services, Coun Richard Brooks, said: “The approval of the Area Action Plan allows Surrey Heath Borough Council to progress with its vision for a thriving future in Camberley town centre.
“The recent development of the Atrium will undoubtedly bring great prospects to the town and I hope that this will mark the beginning of regeneration work that will continue to improve the quality of Camberley.
“It is important that we work together with the community to agree an appropriate action plan for building a positive future for the centre of Camberley.”
A six-week public consultation on the action plan will begin on April 21 and run until June 2
